Kopstein on Anti-Jewish Pogroms

Intimate Violence: Anti-Jewish Pogroms in Occupied Poland and Ukraine

Why do pogroms occur in some localities but not in others? This question has long puzzled scholars. With a focus on the wave of pogroms in Eastern Poland and Western Ukraine that occurred in the first weeks after the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, Professor Kopstein shows that pogroms are only weakly correlated with Polish and Ukrainian nationalism and Jewish support for communism. Instead what matters most for the occurrence of pogroms are pre-existing political and demographic tensions, especially Jewish support for ethnic parties. After discussing these conditions, Professor Kopstein will note what this conclusion means for Polish and Ukrainian wartime culpability and the broader conditions under which pogroms are likely to occur.

Jeffrey Kopstein Kopstein is Professor of Political Science and Acting Director of the Centre for Jewish Studies at the University of Toronto. He has published three books and more than forty peer reviewed articles on comparative and European politics and history. His forthcoming book is Intimate Violence: Anti-Jewish Pogroms as Prelude to the Holocaust.

The Arab Spring One Year Later: Can We Do Anything?

The revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt gave rise to huge hopes for the Arab World and maybe beyond. Seismic changes were taking place. The West and the Arabs(some at least) went into Libya. Yet today, mayhem continues across the region. Syria is a killing field. Islamists have won free and fair elections. The Middle East Peace Process is hardly a process and there is no peace. Crystal ball anyone? Is the West even a player?

Mr. Ferry de Kerckhove holds a Bachelor of Social Science (Honours) in Economics, an M.A. in Political Science from the University of Ottawa, and pursued Ph.D. Studies at Laval University in Québec City. He entered the Canadian Foreign Service in September 1973. After a stint in European Affairs, he was posted as Third Secretary to the Canadian Embassy in Tehran. In September 1992, he was posted to Moscow as Minister and Deputy Head of Mission. Mr. de Kerckhove was named Canada's High Commissioner to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in August 1998 and spent three years in Islamabad. In September 2001, he presented his credentials as Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia and was also accredited to Timor Leste. From 2008 to 2011, Mr. de Kerckhove served as ambassador to the Arab Republic of Egypt. He retired from the Foreign Service in September 2011. He has also published several papers on international relations as well as on the relationship between the Muslim world and the West in specialized journals.

2012 World Issues Annual Conference - Deadline Extended

Call for Workshop Presenters
For the
2012 World Issues Annual Conference

Date: February 23, 2012
Location: Tory Blg, Loeb Blg, Southam Hall

Center for Security and Defence Studies, NPSIA, will host the 2012 World Issues Annual Conference and invites interested Graduate Students to submit a proposal for workshop presentations in English or French. Workshops are presented to senior high school students from the local Ottawa and Gatineau area schools. An honorarium will be provided to each presenter included in the conference. Lunch and full audio/visual support will be provided to all presenters.

Submitting a proposal: Choose your area of interest or a research topic that is related to: national/international security and defence, human security and development, international trade policy, institutions and global governance, intelligence and infrastructure protection policy, global political economy or conflict analysis and conflict resolution.

Write a short summary (1-2 paragraphs) outlining the topic and key points for the presentation and send to Cathleen Schmidt, CSDS, no later than January 20, 2012.

10th Annual CIPSS Graduate Conference

Intervention and conflict resolution in the 21st century
Evolution, challenge and future.

The 10th Annual Graduate Student Conference of the Centre for International Peace and Security Studies (CIPSS) will be held on March 16th 2012. A member of the Security Defense Forum, CIPSS is an inter-university collaboration between Université de Montréal and McGill University dedicated to the promotion of security and strategic studies.

We invite graduate students to submit proposals on security issues, defined in a broad sense. Here are a few topics of interest:

· Strategic Studies
· Military History
· Civil Wars
· Disarmament
· Proliferation of weapons of mass destruction
· Peace Operations
· Conflict resolution
· Civil-Military Relations
· Security and Defense Policies
· International interventions

The primary goal of this conference is to allow graduate students to present their research, while fostering exchanges amongst students of various North American institutions. The best paper presented at the Conference will be awarded a prize. Papers can be presented in either English or French. Some travel grants will be given for travels inside Canada.

Proposals should not exceed 200 words. Please include a short biography. Submit proposals at cepsi.cipss@gmail.com. More Information about the CIPSS can be found at http://www.cepsi.umontreal.ca/defaulten.aspx.

Deadline for proposals: January 27th, 2012

After the selection of participants, the final and complete version of the papers has to be sent to the CIPSS before March 2nd.

2012 ISA Canada Graduate Student Paper Prize

ISA Canada is pleased to announce the call for papers for the 2012 ISA Canada Student Paper Prize.

Value: $300.00

According to the terms of reference adopted by the membership of ISA Canada in March 2011, the ISA Canada Student Paper Prize is:

•     Open to all PhD students who are members of ISA and ISA-Canada
•     Open to PhD students in any of the disciplines that fall under the aegis of International Studies
•     To be awarded for a previously unpublished, single authored paper delivered at the ISA meeting in that given year.
•     PhD dissertation chapters will be accepted if they are previously unpublished.
•     To be awarded to a paper written in either French or English.
•     To be awarded at the reception held by ISA-Canada at the Annual Meeting of the International Studies Association.
•     Papers must be received by the prize jury three weeks in advance of the ISA meeting.

In addition to the criteria above:

•     Submissions are to be no longer than 8000 words
•     Submissions will be evaluated for: originality, strength, clarity of argument, and contribution to the appropriate literature.
•     Submissions are due Monday, March 12, 2012.
•     Submissions will be made to members of the jury. Jury members will be announced by January 15, 2012.

The deadline for submissions for the Centre for International Policy Studies fourth annual Graduate Student Conference has been extended from January 15 to January 31, 2012.

The conference, “Coping with Change in Global Affairs” will be held at the University of Ottawa on March 22-23, 2012. We are seeking submissions from a variety of disciplines such as the political sciences, history, geography, economics, security and development, anthropology, international relations and studies, sociology, and military strategy.
